If you’re wondering how to make silicone molds for resin, you’ve come to the right place. Silicone molds are the perfect way to pour resin into exactly the shape you need it. If you’re making coasters, casting a figurine or small resin statue, or making an interesting paper weight, a silicone mold is the ideal molding material.
First, find the original part that you want to make a resin part of. You can choose anything to be your original so long as it’s not too thin, soft fabric based, unsealed glass or ceramic. Try not to mold a valuable, original irreplaceable item because you don’t want it to get blemished or damaged in the molding process.
Apply hot glue to the bottom of your original and place it your mold box that’s made from cardboard or stiff plastic. You want a space between ¼” and ½” between the mold item and the sides and top of the box.
Carefully pour the silicone rubber into one corner of the box until it’s nearly full a ¼” to ½” above the top of the glued down part. Wait until the mold cures, and then strip away the box. Carefully extract your mold item and you’ll be left with a perfect custom silicone resin mold.
Whether you’re making large silicone molds for resin or small ones, AeroMarine silicone molds for resin are the perfect rubber molds for resin casting.
It depends on the resin you are using. Urethane resin and some epoxy resins will work great in our tin based silicones like the AM128 and AM125. Other epoxy resins need a platinum based silicone mold which you can use the food grade silicone to make. Always check with your resin supplier to see which type of silicone is recommended for the best results.
Silicone molds will pick up the finish of the original part they are made from so if you want a slick glossy finish make sure you start with an item that has one.
You don’t want to have to make a new mold every time you’re pouring a new resin cast, especially if you’re trying to expand your crafting business and doing a lot of silicone mold making for resin. Aeromarine silicone molds are durable, tear-resistant, and surface heat-resistant.That means that you can use them again and again without the risk of them losing shape or tearing, so you aren’t constantly having to remake molds.
