Thermal Potting Compound FAQs:
Which material is the best thermal potting compound?
The best material for thermal potting compound is silicone, because it can adapt to temperatures ranging from -50F (-45C) to 500F (260C). AeroMarine Products’ AM150 Silicone High Temperature Encapsulation RTV Rubber has a thermal conductivity range from 77F to 212F.
What are thermal potting compounds used for?
High thermal conductivity potting compounds are used for a variety of high-temperature applications. Some cases where thermal potting compounds may be used include:
- Potting electrical circuits
- Marine and automotive use
- Making molds for low-melt metals like tin and pewter
- Vibration and moisture protection
Electricians and DIY craftsmen mostly use thermal potting compounds for electrical equipment that may generate a lot of heat. For example, motors can overheat and cause damage to the rest of an electrical or mechanical device. Thermal potting compounds have a wide operating temperature range, which can prevent motors from overheating.
What is the drying time and shelf life of thermal potting compounds?
AeroMarine Products’ AM 150 Silicone High Temperature Encapsulation Rubber has a cure time of 12 hours. When using our high thermal conductivity potting compound, waiting at least 12 hours for your potting or encapsulation project to complete will ensure your electrical components are fully protected from overheating.
When working with thermally conductive silicone potting compound, it’s best to start with a smaller mixture, at least 3 ounces. The pot life of our thermal potting compound is 45 minutes, so if you have a large project that will take longer than this time limit, it’s best to do multiple layers. Wait for the first layer to cure before adding an additional one.
Once you’re finished with your electrical potting compound project, you’ll be happy to find our high temperature potting compound has a shelf life of six months. To ensure your thermally conductive potting compound stays fresh, store it in its original containers in a cool, dry place off the floor and on a shelf.
