Epoxy Glue FAQs:
What is epoxy glue?
Epoxy glue is a copolymer that is created when two starting compounds, a resin and a hardener, are mixed together. When these two compounds are combined, they create an epoxy adhesive. The epoxies produce an exothermic reaction when curing.
Epoxy glue works in a few ways. The epoxy mixture is sensitive to the air (ambient) temperature during the curing process. Depending on the ambient temperature, epoxy glue can harden within 24 to 72 hours. Epoxy glue is also modifiable, meaning it can be changed and altered before it is used. For example, you can add fillers and pigments to alter viscosity, flexibility, color and strength.
How to use epoxy glue?
Using epoxy glue is a relatively simple process. Whether you’re filling in cracks in concrete, repairing furniture, or gluing joins, follow these steps to use epoxy glue:
- Thoroughly clean the surface that you are applying epoxy glue to. Make sure you have all the required safety equipment, such as safety goggles, nitrile gloves, and a well-ventilated area.
- Mix your epoxy hardener and epoxy resin following the directions written on the label to create your epoxy adhesive.
- Apply the epoxy resin to the surface with a paintbrush, roller, or pour it on and remove any air bubbles using a heat gun.
- Wait for the epoxy glue to cure.
The steps above are the basic steps for using epoxy adhesive. However, extra steps may be required for the type of project you’re completing. For example, if you’re filling in cracks in your concrete, you may need to mix in fumed silica, 1/32″ milled fibers or dry sand to make a thick slurry.
If you ever find yourself in a sticky situation and need to remove epoxy glue—don’t fret. While epoxy is an extremely adhesive compound, it can be removed if done properly. To remove epoxy adhesive, consider these solutions while wearing gloves and safety glasses:
- Orange Pumice Scrub: If you just completed an epoxy project and ended up with epoxy on your hands, you can use an orange pumice scrub to wash the epoxy away. Once the epoxy is removed, wash your hands again with soap and water.
- Acetone: If the epoxy you were working with cured and you need it removed, acetone can help remove it.
Are epoxy adhesives heat and water-resistant?
Yes, epoxy adhesives are both heat and water-resistant once they are cured. AeroMarine’s epoxy adhesives are heat resistant up to 200F. As for water, epoxy is completely waterproof. Due to the high bonding strength of epoxy, cured epoxy glue can withstand water, making it great for boat repairs.
