Marine Epoxy FAQs:
How to use marine epoxy
Marine grade epoxy is an excellent way to protect your watercraft to ensure it can withstand the forces of rough seas. If you want to apply waterproof epoxy to your boat, follow these steps:
- Clean: Begin by cleaning your boat and removing any salt, grease, grime, wax, and oil using a de-wax solvent.
- Prepare: Once you’ve cleaned your boat, begin preparing your marine epoxy resin with a marine epoxy hardener. Begin by filling a container with epoxy resin and filling a second container with half as much epoxy hardener. Pour the two cups together into a new container and begin stirring with a wooden mixing stick. Once mixed, pour the epoxy solution into another container, and mix one last time for about a minute.
Do not mix all of your marine epoxy resin and epoxy hardener at once. If you do, it will cure before you finish. Instead, make small batches and mix as you go. - Apply: After you’ve mixed your boat epoxy solution, it’s time to seal the surface of your boat. Do this by using a paintbrush or a foam roller to apply the first coat. Let each layer of epoxy resin have 12 hours to cure at 70 degrees Fahrenheit before applying the next coat. It’s advised to apply between 2 and 3 coats of waterproof epoxy.
- Removing Excess Epoxy: Epoxying your boat can be a messy job. If you need to remove any uncured epoxy, use a metal or plastic scraper and scrape away any epoxy you don’t need. Then, use acetone or isopropyl alcohol and scrub away the remnants. You can use sandpaper and sand away any excess if the epoxy has already cured.
Is marine epoxy waterproof?
Yes, marine epoxy is waterproof. Marine epoxy resin is a clear, low viscosity cycloaliphatic epoxy system that bonds well, is a strong and durable material, and provides a glassy finish that will make your vessel shine. Waterproof epoxy can be used to laminate boats using fiberglass, carbon fiber, or Kevlar cloth and to build stitch and glue boats. Underwater epoxy can bond to wood, most metal, and some plastics.
