What are epoxy fillers and how do you use them?
Epoxy fillers are used to modify the properties of epoxy and can be used before and after the epoxy cures. Before cures, epoxy cures can modify the viscosity, sag resistance, and ease the fairing and flow. After it cures, epoxy fillers can modify strength, flexibility, and sandability. Below are our different types of epoxy fillers and what they are best used for:
AeroMarine Cabosil Filler: Modifies the sag resistance of your epoxy
AeroMarine Talc Filler: Modifies the thickness of your epoxy
AeroMarine Milled Fiber Filler: Adds strength and flexibility to your epoxy
AeroMarine Pecan Flour Filler: Can be used for wood restoration
AeroMarine Microsphere Filler: Can be used for sanding and fairing
AeroMarine Phenolic Microsphere Filler: Can be used for sanding and fairing
AeroMarine Anti-Skid Filler: Can be mixed with epoxy to create a non-skid surface
To use epoxy fillers, follow these steps:
- Clean the surface of where you’re applying epoxy so there is no dust, dirt, or grime present
- Mix your epoxy resin with an epoxy hardener by slowly pouring them into a plastic container and stir slowly. Once combined, pour the epoxy solution into a second container to remove clumps and air bubbles and ensure that the entire solution is mixed.
- Then, mix your epoxy filler with your epoxy system using your preferred ratio, such as 1:1 or 1.5:1
- Using a paintbrush, brush your epoxy and epoxy filler mix onto your desired surface
- Use a heat gun to remove any air bubbles
- Let your surface cure for the recommended amount of hours listed on your epoxy system
Why should I use an epoxy filler?
Epoxy fillers can be used for a variety of reasons. For example, epoxy fillers can be used for marine construction to create a constructional component. Or, if you’re laying fiberglass, cabosil and milled fiber epoxy fillers can be used to create fillets that create a radius curve where caulk can lay. Epoxy fillers, such as our microsphere and phenolic microsphere filler can be used for sanding, while our talc filler can make your epoxy solution thicker.
Lastly, pecan flour epoxy fillers can be used on antique homes and other wood surfaces to create a durable and strong surface. When using pecan flour epoxy fillers, it will turn clear epoxy resin a dark color to match the wood. However, you can use sawdust and other fillers to lighten the epoxy solution to match the color of your wooden surface.
