Making a one piece silicone mold

September 7, 2016

A one piece silicone rubber block mold is the simplest and easiest silicone rubber mold to make.  With a silicone rubber mold, you can create your own jewelry, figurines, soaps, candles, prototypes or industrial parts!

To make a one piece silicone rubber mold, you need the following:

If using cardboard and hot glue or Legos, build your mold box.  To keep the silicone rubber from sticking to your piece, please seal it with appropriate sealing material, especially if your piece is porous like wood or plaster. Next, mount your original piece with hot glue inside your mold box, leaving 1″ space between your mold box walls and your piece. Now, measure and mix the liquid silicone rubber.  Pour side A and Side B into separate containers until you have the same amount in each container.  Then, pour both A and B into the third container.  Mix thoroughly and vigorously, scraping down sides and bottom of container until the colors are one uniform color with no streaks.  Always keep your mixing utensil on the bottom of your mold box when mixing. Don’t whip air into the silicone rubber because you will get air bubbles in your silicone that will ruin the mold.  Now, pour the mixed silicone high, slowly and thin into a corner or side of your mold box.  Do not pour the silicone directly onto your original piece because you will get air bubbles in your mold. Let your mold cure for at least 2  hours.  Once your mold has cured, remove your original piece from your mold by pressing down on your mold and wiggling out or gently removing your piece.  You can then trim off any excess cured silicone, called “flash”, with an Xacto knife.
